What I was doing in the 90s, The Airshop years

July 4, 2013 in Catalog Web

In 1996, I created a fashion catalog called Airshop with Geoff Seelinger, and one of the shrewdest garment district fashion buyers in NYC. We launched one of the first successful online fashion retail operations. It was the dawn of the internet. We were responsible for standardizing scrolling frame navigation (you’re welcome), data mining (sorry), and that 90s glowing-people effect (make what you will of that). Airshop started as a Web site, then went to print. We would drop 1.5 million of these in the mail per season by the end — larger than most magazines’ circulations. I left the business in 1998. The ride ended for Airshop shortly thereafter, when its investor Jalate, Inc. went belly up. A sweet time, the 90s was. Ask me some time about how Boy George and I broke up a fight between one of my business partners and Liv Tyler’s boyfriend. All the photography is by John Marolakos.
